OpenAI API vs Anthropic Claude API
Compare two usage-priced model platforms by integration surface, authentication, tool workflows, limits, and evaluation discipline.
Integration differences that persist longer than model rankings
Both platforms expose JSON APIs, streaming, tool-oriented workflows, official SDKs, and usage-based billing. The durable differences are request schemas, platform-specific tools, authentication/version headers, cloud routes, and operational controls.
| Decision axis | OpenAI API | Claude API |
|---|---|---|
| General model endpoint | Responses API | Messages API |
| Authentication | Bearer API key | Bearer token or x-api-key |
| Explicit version header | Not part of the standard request pattern | anthropic-version is required |
| Limits | Model and organization/project usage tier | Organization usage tier with spend and rate limits |
| Cloud alternatives | Direct OpenAI platform | Direct Anthropic plus documented cloud-platform routes |
Build the evaluation first
Create a frozen set of real tasks: short answers, long documents, structured extraction, tool calls, safety-sensitive cases, and failure recovery. Grade correctness and schema adherence automatically where possible; review style and reasoning quality blind. Record model identifier, prompt version, date, latency, input/output usage, retries, and tool failures.
Compare total workflow cost
Token price alone misses retry rates, long outputs, cached-input behavior, batch discounts, tool charges, and engineering complexity. A cheaper call that needs frequent repair can cost more per accepted result.
Design for replacement
Keep provider payload construction behind an adapter. Store a neutral task request and normalized result, but preserve the raw provider response for diagnosis. Do not force every provider feature into one lowest-common-denominator interface; expose capability flags where behavior genuinely differs.
