yfinance vs Alpha Vantage
Compare a free open-source Python library over Yahoo Finance interfaces with a hosted, key-based market-data API for prototypes and small projects.
Integration shape
yfinance is a Python package, not a hosted API: yf.download("AAPL", period="1mo") returns pandas DataFrames with no key, no quota contract, and no SLA. Alpha Vantage is a hosted REST API where most calls go to one /query endpoint and a function parameter selects behavior, authenticated with an apikey query parameter. The standard free allowance is 25 requests per day, with premium plans raising throughput.
| Decision axis | yfinance | Alpha Vantage |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Python library | Hosted API (REST) |
| Auth | None for the normal package interface | API key in the apikey query parameter |
| Free allowance | Free software; upstream throttling is informal | 25 requests per day on the standard plan |
| Pricing | Free Apache-2.0; Yahoo data rights are separate | Free standard allowance plus paid premium request-rate plans |
| Technical indicators | Computed in pandas by the user | Built-in indicator and economic-series functions |
| Error model | Python exceptions and upstream response changes | JSON Note, Information, or Error Message fields — validate before consuming |
| Accountability | None; not affiliated with or vetted by Yahoo | Vendor with documented plans and support |
Where yfinance wins
Zero setup for research. One pip install and a notebook has ticker history, financials, options, screeners, and corporate actions as DataFrames. For personal analysis, classroom work, and throwaway prototypes, nothing is faster — and pandas does the indicator math for free.
Where Alpha Vantage wins
It is an actual service: a key, documented quotas, and an upgrade path. The function-style interface (one endpoint, many functions) is easy to call from scripts, spreadsheets, and non-Python stacks, and built-in technical-indicator and macro functions reduce client-side calculation. Premium plans remove the daily cap for heavier use.
Count your requests before you commit
Twenty-five requests a day is tiny — sketch the call budget first, because a prototype that needs 200 symbols will not fit. Validate Alpha Vantage’s Note/Information/Error Message fields before writing anything to a database; a throttled response is still valid JSON. And remember yfinance’s own framing: Yahoo data is intended for personal and research use, so check the underlying terms before the prototype becomes a product.
